In Mexico, in the state of Oaxaca, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula got married in July of 2023 to a caiman. Indeed, Víctor Hugo SOSA decided to love and cherish his “wife“. His said “wife” is a female caiman of the age of 7 years old. Her name is Alicia Adrianna and her nickname shared by her husband is "my little princess". For 230 years, a tradition has been applied. This tradition was created by the Chontal and Huave indigenous communities to connect themselves to "Mother Earth ". It is meant to symbolise the union between humans and the divine. Those communities also believe that it was made in order for the population to ask for rain, germination of seed, wealthy harvest and other things like peace and harmony of the Chontal man according to Jaime Zárate, a journalist of San Pedro. Moreover, it’s a symbol of union between two different ethnic groups in the region, the Huavis and the Chontalis. The female caiman represents The Princess Huave de San Mateo del Mar and the mayor represents a Chontal King in the past. Victor Hugo SOSA said that "I agree to this responsibility because we love each other : that’s what’s important, there can’t be a wedding if we don’t love each other in the first place" announced Víctor Hugo SOSA.
